Improving the Structural Performance and Safety of a Celebrated Historic Property:

DDB worked closely with the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa to complete a full seismic retrofit of the historic retail building just steps away from their 144-year-old iconic AAA Four Diamond award-winning hotel in Riverside, California. Working in the fully occupied space required DDB to balance traditional construction methods with innovative approaches in order to minimize disruption while improving structural performance and maintaining the integrity of the celebrated historic structure. The result is a stronger, more resilient building that preserves the character of the existing Mission-style architecture.

Key Project Details:

  • Delivered a full seismic retrofit to an existing single-story unreinforced masonry building within an the aggressive four-month timeline while minimizing disruption to tenants.
  • Implemented seismic force-resisting systems including new steel moment frames, raft foundations, shear walls, seismic braces, rough carpentry elements, and bond beams to improve earthquake resistance.
  • Restored the historic façade while preserving the building’s existing design and character.
